Kuwait Airport

Kuwait International airport. Giss has it as nightlights =0, so do I. By looking at comparisons of nightlights with the station centered and a static google map with the station centered, there are mismatches between GISS and Me and between Nightlights and the  world. Subtle shift here and there. Annoying. Also, you can see how subtle shifts could turn a station from rural to urban.

I’ve not yet had time to examine Rgooglemap and Raster. When I get put out to grass later this month perhaps.

Is it possible to merge the contours with the Google map or a Google Earth image, along the lines of the approximate merge of your contours with a Google Earth image at http://oneillp.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/kuwaitmerged.jpg ?
(see the four pushpins in the Google Earth image approximately aligned to your grid, and more transparent)

That’s what I want to do!

The Googlemap gets saved as a jpg, as does the plot. The trick would be setting a transparency level and registering.

Peter the code is all done to look through every station, crop to 1 degree, find if there is an periurban/urban within various ranges,

The google map server does not like to be pounded up ( limit of 1000 static maps per day)

If we can figure out the transparency settings and the registration its a snap
